Privacy policy

Last updated: اقرأ بالعربية

  • The app never asks who you are. There is no account, and no ads.
  • Your favourites, settings and saved recitations stay on your device.
  • We use Google Firebase for anonymous usage statistics, crash reports and the optional daily verse notification.
  • We do not sell your data, and we do not track you across other companies’ apps or websites.

This policy explains how the Chosen Ayah (آية مختارة) app for iOS and Android (“the app”) and this website handle information. The app is made by Yahia E. Salem, an independent developer (“we”, “us”). If anything here is unclear, write to yahia.codes@gmail.com.

1. Information that stays on your device

Most of what the app knows about you never leaves your phone. This includes your favourite verses, your chosen riwaya, reciter, theme and text size, your reminder schedule and reading position, the content of home-screen widgets, and recitations saved for offline listening. We cannot see any of it. Uninstalling the app deletes it, and saved recitations can be removed at any time from the app’s settings.

2. Information collected through services we use

The app relies on a small number of third-party services. Each receives only what it needs to do its job.

Usage statistics — Google Firebase Analytics

Firebase Analytics records how the app is used, so we know which features are worth improving. It collects events such as opening the app, choosing a theme, or sharing a verse, along with an app-instance identifier generated for your installation, your device model, operating system and app version, language, and an approximate location (country or region) derived from your IP address. It is not linked to your name, email or any account, and we do not use the advertising identifier.

Crash reports — Google Firebase Crashlytics

If the app crashes or hits an error, Crashlytics sends us a report so we can fix it. A report contains technical details: the error and where in the code it happened, device model, operating system and app version, and an installation identifier. Firebase keeps crash reports for 90 days.

The daily verse — Firebase Cloud Messaging

The optional “verse of the day” notification is delivered by Firebase Cloud Messaging, which assigns your device a registration token. We send the same message to everyone who has it switched on; we don’t message individual devices. You can turn it off in the app’s settings or in your device’s notification settings.

Voluntary tips — RevenueCat, Apple and Google

The app is free. If you choose to leave a tip, the purchase is processed by the App Store or Google Play, and managed through RevenueCat. RevenueCat receives an anonymous identifier it creates, the transaction details from the store, and basic device and app information. We never see your name, payment card or billing details.

Recitations — audio servers

When you play a recitation that isn’t already saved on your device, the app downloads it from one of the public servers that host it — everyayah.com, cdn.islamic.network oraudio.qurancdn.com. Like any web server, they receive standard request information such as your IP address. The app sends them nothing else.

Ratings

The app may occasionally invite you to rate it. The rating dialog is provided by Apple or Google; we only learn that the prompt was shown and which option you chose.

3. Notifications

Verse reminders are scheduled on your device. The app asks for permission before sending any notification, and you can change the schedule or turn reminders off at any time.

4. What we don’t do

  • We don’t show ads, and we don’t share data with advertisers.
  • We don’t sell or rent information to anyone.
  • We don’t track you across apps or websites owned by other companies.
  • We don’t ask for your name, email, phone number, contacts or precise location.

5. Why we process this information

We use the information above only to run the app, deliver the notifications you ask for, fix crashes, process tips, and understand which features are used. Where the GDPR or similar laws apply, we rely on our legitimate interest in keeping the app reliable and useful (statistics and crash reports), on your consent (notifications), and on performing the transaction you requested (tips).

6. Where it is stored, and for how long

Firebase and RevenueCat may process information on servers outside your country, including in the United States, under their own safeguards. Analytics data is kept for a limited period under Google’s retention settings and then deleted automatically; crash reports are kept for 90 days. Notification tokens that are no longer used expire on their own.

7. Your choices and rights

  • Turn off reminders or the daily verse at any time, in the app or in your device settings.
  • Delete saved recitations from the app’s settings.
  • Uninstall the app to delete everything stored on your device and stop all collection.
  • Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct or delete information about you, or to object to its processing. Email us and we will respond within 30 days. Because the app doesn’t know who you are, we may need your help identifying the installation concerned.

8. Children

The app is suitable for all ages and does not ask anyone for personal information. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

9. This website

This website uses no cookies, no analytics and no tracking. Its fonts and images are served from the site itself. When you press Choose a verse, your browser fetches the verse, translation and tafsir from the public Quran.com API (api.quran.com), and when you press Listen it streams the recitation from everyayah.com. Those services receive your IP address and standard browser information. Our hosting provider may keep short-lived server logs for security.

10. Security

Information sent by the app travels over encrypted connections, and the services we use maintain their own security programmes. No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure, but we collect as little as we can, which is the best protection there is.

11. Changes to this policy

If we change how the app handles information, we will update this page and the date at the top. Significant changes will also be noted in the app’s release notes.
